Four Americana Music Acts Added to Performing Artists Directory

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 11, 2018) — JoAnna Oldfield and James Moore practiced together for about two years before starting to perform live in May 2016. That perseverance paid off for the Americana duo, known as JOANNA~JAMES, as they became one of four Americana music acts adjudicated into the Kentucky Arts Council’s Performing Artists Directory.

“People recognize the arts council as being reputable and being a part of the Performing Artists Directory means a lot,” Oldfield said. “I think it will help us reach the clients we want to perform for, and help point us in the direction we want to take our music in Kentucky.”

The arts council endeavors to promote, showcase and provide professional development opportunities to a diverse selection of Kentucky's finest contemporary and traditional performing artists through the Performing Artists Directory.

The Performing Artists Directory is an online roster of adjudicated performing artists used by in-state and out-of-state presenters and others as a resource for identifying artists for performance bookings and projects. Inclusion in the directory is a recognition of artistic excellence by the state arts agency and boosts the profile of the region where those artists are from, as well as Kentucky’s profile when those performing groups travel out of state.

Groups in the Performing Artists Directory are eligible to apply for consultancies from members of the Kentucky Peer Advisory Network (KPAN), a feature Oldfield said was one that JOANNA~JAMES would use.

“We’re excited about the opportunity for a KPAN consultancy,” she said. “It will help us further our knowledge of marketing and promoting the act. James and I both work, so it will be awesome to learn how to do marketing and promotions within our limited time.”

The four new acts are:

Barrenhart, Hart County
Jeri Katherine Howell, Franklin County
JOANNA~JAMES, Morgan County
The Local Honeys, Woodford County

For more information on the Performing Artists Directory, contact Tamara Coffey, individual artist director, at 502-892-3121, or tamara.coffey@ky.gov or visit the arts council’s Performing Artists Directory page.

BLUEGRASS & ROSES: almost there...

When we began this project in May of 2017 we had hoped to have it completed by September 2017.  Looking back I can't help but laugh at the thought.  WOW!!!  An album is not just ALOT of money, but a TON of work!!  Especially, if you want it to be something that you are proud of.  After nearly a year, buckets of blood, sweat, and tears we feel like our album is almost there...

We are currently in the mixing process and think we may have FINALLY found the right engineer.  He's incredibly intuitive and seems to have a sixth sense when it comes to music...not to mention a truck load of reputable credits under his belt, such as Selena Gomez, Donna Summer, Miley Cyrus, Billy Idol, Joe Cocker, Elton John, U2, Kenny Loggins,Grace Potter, Eddie Money, Janet Jackson, Bob Seger, Jonas Brothers, Sinéad O'Connor, and James Ingram to name a few.

With that in mind, we are super excited and hopeful that our Kentucky Tribute album will be completed sometime in June of 2018...but honestly it just can't come soon enough for us!!!

A Kentucky Tribute: In the Beginning...

Early in the spring of 2017 I had released an original tune I wrote nearly 10 years earlier titled Kentucky Proud.  The track caught the attention of the Kentucky Departments of Agriculture and Tourism Commission, but what I didn't know was the inspiration the song was going to stir in the months to come.  At that time James and I had been a musical duo for 2 years and we had quite a repertoire of original music under our belt...even so, we just couldn't come together on an album theme.  Almost all of our original music was about love, whether it be heartaches or butterflies...and that could be a theme right?  Well, it's also the theme of almost every other song and album out there and not that that is a bad thing, but for some reason it just didn't feel like the direction we should go in at that time.

It wasn't until a friend of mine, Langley Franklin, took interest in my Kentucky Proud song that things started progressing for our duo.  Langley was super enthusiastic about a new and original song about Kentucky, so much so that he began getting gigs for us; including an appearance on Lexington FOX 56 news, which later led to a debut on Midday Kentucky (thanks to Brandon Elam!!!).   Later when Langley heard our swing/grass style version of My Old Kentucky Home he suggested that we produce a Kentucky album.  He sent a list of Kentucky classics that we could cover for the project and left the rest to us.  Though James and I enjoy doing a few covers, we both agreed that there could be a lot of hassle cutting an album of other people's work... and we already had over 50 originals songs of our own...so, that's when the light bulb went off.  Why couldn't we just write an album of original songs about Kentucky?  We've both been Kentucky natives all of our lives, our state is full of interesting historical events and culture, and creating new music is a passion for our duo.

...and so that was the beginning of our Kentucky tribute album "Bluegrass & Roses".  It was as if the stars had aligned and the dream of having a  JOANNA~JAMES album was finally attainable.  It just felt right.  Within 3 months we had written 11 original songs about our beloved state of Kentucky and now as we put together the final details of our project I can honestly say that it was worth waiting for.  A Kentucky themed project was totally unexpected, yet has led JOANNA~JAMES on a path of musical fulfillment, as well as inspired a deeper connection with Kentucky audiences.  There's no doubt this project was truly a match made in the Bluegrass!!!
